Air conditioner and heat pump maintenance: what you can do and what needs a technician

Prepared by EKO2ŠILUMA engineers · Updated 2026-10-29

As the owner, you clean the indoor unit filters following the manual, keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and check that condensate drains properly. Anything involving refrigerant, electrics or pressure testing is strictly for certified technicians, so leave periodic servicing to professionals.

In Lithuania an air-to-air heat pump or air conditioner often works all year round: heating in winter, cooling in summer. Maintenance matters for such a unit as much as servicing does for a car – it keeps efficiency up, operation quiet and service life long. Some tasks you can do yourself, but the key checks must be carried out by a qualified technician.

What you can do yourself

  • Clean the indoor unit filters. This is the most frequent maintenance task. Dusty filters noticeably reduce efficiency and heat output, so clean them as often as the user manual says – more often with heavy use. Switch the unit off first.
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear. Make sure snow, ice, leaves and debris do not build up around the outdoor unit and nothing blocks the airflow. In winter, defrost water must have somewhere to go – raised stands, brackets and a condensate collection box help.
  • Check condensate drainage. Look for water dripping from the indoor unit and make sure the drain hose is not blocked or frozen.
  • Watch how the unit behaves. Unusual noise, vibration, smell or an error code on the controller is a signal to call service.

What not to do yourself

The refrigerant circuit is a sealed, pressurised system and the unit runs on mains voltage. So never attempt to:

  • add or release refrigerant, or disconnect or reroute refrigerant pipes;
  • carry out pressure or leak tests;
  • open electrical boxes, replace control boards or rewire connections;
  • dismantle the outdoor unit casing or fan.

Work involving fluorinated greenhouse gases may only be carried out by certified technicians. Unqualified intervention can be dangerous, damage the equipment and affect the warranty.

What a maintenance visit covers

When an EKO2ŠILUMA technician services a Mitsubishi Electric unit, they typically check:

  • the indoor heat exchanger, fan and drain pan – cleaning and, if needed, disinfecting;
  • the outdoor heat exchanger and fan, mounting and anti-vibration supports;
  • condensate drainage and the heater cable (if fitted);
  • electrical connections and operating parameters;
  • refrigerant circuit tightness in line with legal requirements and the unit documentation.

We recommend agreeing the service interval with our specialist – it depends on the unit type, how intensively it is used and its surroundings. A check before the heating season helps avoid surprises on the coldest days.

Remote monitoring with MELCloud

Many Mitsubishi Electric units can be controlled and monitored via the MELCloud app. You can see the unit status, change settings from your phone and spot error messages sooner. When you report a fault, the error code from the app or controller helps the technician prepare for the visit.

Seasonal checklist

Before the heating season: clean the filters, check that the outdoor unit is securely mounted and raised above likely snow level, and that condensate has somewhere to drain. Make sure heating mode and suitable schedules are set on the controller. If the unit has not been serviced for longer than your technician recommends, book a visit now – service diaries fill up in autumn.

In winter: do not worry if the outdoor unit stops briefly and gives off steam – that is the defrost cycle. Avoid switching the heat pump on and off frequently: steady operation is more economical and kinder to the compressor. After heavy snowfall, carefully clear snow around the unit without touching the coil fins.

Before the cooling season: clean the filters again, switch to cooling and check that condensate drains freely. An unusual smell when cooling starts means the indoor unit needs professional cleaning.

How to book maintenance

FAQ

How often should I clean the air conditioner filters?

As often as your model's manual specifies, and more often with heavy use, for example during the heating season. If a heat pump seems to deliver less heat over time, check the filters first.

Can I top up the refrigerant myself?

No. Refrigerant work may only be done by certified technicians with the proper equipment. A lack of refrigerant usually means a leak, which must be found and repaired first.

What should I do if the outdoor unit ices up?

In cold weather a heat pump periodically defrosts its outdoor coil – this is normal. Do not chip or knock off ice. If ice keeps building up, water has nowhere to drain or the unit shows an error, contact service.

Do you service equipment you did not install?

Send a request via the service page with the unit model and the issue – we will assess the situation and propose a solution.
