Heat pump cost: what makes up the price

Prepared by EKO2ŠILUMA engineers · Updated 2026-10-29

The cost of a heat pump is more than the unit itself: installation materials, labour, electrical connection, commissioning, chosen options and the specifics of the building all add up. That is why the exact price is set after assessing the site. Our price planner gives a first picture, and an EKO2ŠILUMA specialist provides the final quote.

"How much does a heat pump cost?" is one of the questions we hear most. The honest answer: it depends on which system you choose and for what building. Two houses that look alike may need different capacities, different equipment and a different scope of installation. Below we explain what the price consists of, so you can compare solutions rather than bare numbers.

1. Equipment

  • System type. Air-to-air (wall-mounted, floor, cassette, ducted, multi split), air-to-water (Ecodan with a cylinder or Hydro-box without, split or monobloc) or ground source.
  • Capacity. Sized to the building's heat demand – see what size heat pump you need.
  • Series and technology. For example, Hyper Heating or ZUBADAN models built for cold climates, efficiency class, noise level and design.

2. Installation materials

Quality installation needs quality materials: copper refrigerant pipes and insulation, wall brackets or stands for the outdoor unit, anti-vibration mounts, condensate drainage (in winter a heater cable or a condensate collection box may be needed), trunking, power cables and protection devices. Air-to-water systems also need pipework, valves, expansion vessels, filters and sometimes a buffer tank.

3. Labour

The scope depends on the distance between indoor and outdoor units, wall material, mounting height, pipe route complexity, façade access and the need to work at height. In an existing house, connecting to or reworking the old system adds to it.

4. Electrical connection

A heat pump needs a suitable circuit and protection. Sometimes the capacity of the existing supply has to be checked. Electrical work is done by qualified electricians.

5. Commissioning

Evacuation, leak testing, start-up, heating curve and control settings, and user instruction. Much of the system's future running economy depends on this stage.

6. Options and controls

A domestic hot water cylinder, a wireless controller with room sensor (e.g. PAR-WT), wired controllers, MELCloud remote control and protective grilles for the outdoor unit.

7. Building specifics

Heat emitter type (underfloor heating or radiators), required flow temperature, space for the cylinder or hydro unit, outdoor unit location and noise constraints, architectural or apartment-building rules.

Purchase price and running costs

When assessing a system, look beyond the purchase sum. Over its service life, how much electricity it uses, what maintenance costs and how it performs on the coldest days matter just as much. A more efficient model or more precisely sized capacity may cost more up front, so it should be weighed over the whole operating life. Our heating cost scenario tool lets you compare scenarios based on assumptions you choose.

Why the cheapest quote is not always the cheapest

When materials, commissioning or the condensate solution are missing from a quote, these costs often appear later. Wrong sizing or poor installation can lead to higher running costs and faults. That is why our quotes list every part – equipment, materials, labour, commissioning – separately.

Grants and paperwork

If you plan to apply for state support towards a heat pump, check the conditions and required documents with the administering institution before you buy. We will provide the equipment documentation and records of completed work you need.

How to get an exact price

The exact price is set after a site survey that takes all installation conditions into account. We provide a clear quote showing equipment, materials and labour – with no hidden lines. Start with the price planner: it shows which factors matter most in your case and gives a preliminary range with clear assumptions. Then fill in my project – our specialist will get in touch, confirm the details and prepare a quote. If you are choosing between system types, read air-to-air or air-to-water and heat pump electricity use in winter.

FAQ

Why can't you give a price over the phone?

We can give an indicative quote based on the details you provide, but the exact price depends on installation conditions – pipe run, walls, electrics and the heating system. That is why we confirm the final price after assessing the site.

Are commissioning and set-up included in the price?

In our quote, commissioning and set-up are shown as a separate, clearly visible line so you know what you are paying for.

What drives the cost of an air-to-water system most?

Usually the required capacity, system type (with or without cylinder, split or monobloc), the condition of the existing heating system and how much hydraulic work is needed.

Does the price planner give a final price?

No. The planner gives a preliminary range with visible assumptions. The final price is confirmed by our specialist.
