GWP (global warming potential)

GWP shows how many times more a refrigerant contributes to the greenhouse effect than the same mass of CO₂ over 100 years.

GWP (Global Warming Potential) – CO₂ has a GWP of 1, and the value for other gases shows how many times more they warm the climate over a 100-year period. For example, R32 has a GWP of 675, R410A 2088, while the natural refrigerant R290 has a very low GWP.

Why it matters when choosing equipment:

  • The EU F-gas Regulation gradually restricts high-GWP refrigerants, so low-GWP equipment is a more future-proof long-term choice.
  • The refrigerant charge expressed as CO₂ equivalent (kg × GWP) determines which periodic leak checks apply to the system.
  • A well-installed, tight system does not release refrigerant – GWP matters in the event of a leak or at disposal.

The Mitsubishi Electric equipment we offer uses R32 and R290 refrigerants. We state the refrigerant and charge of each model in its technical data, and leak checks and refrigerant work are carried out by qualified technicians.
