Air filter classes (ISO 16890)

Air filter classes under ISO 16890 show what share of particles of a given size a filter captures.

Filters in ventilation units are classified under the ISO 16890 standard. It rates the percentage of particles a filter captures in three size groups:

  • ePM1 – the finest particles up to 1 µm (part of smog and soot);
  • ePM2.5 – particles up to 2.5 µm;
  • ePM10 – larger particles up to 10 µm (dust, pollen);
  • Coarse – coarse filters for large particles.

For example, “ePM1 55%” means the filter captures at least 55% of particles up to 1 µm. The older EN 779 standard (classes G4, M5, F7) is still encountered, but the classes do not map directly.

A finer filter cleans the air better but adds more resistance, so it must be matched to the unit’s fan. Clogged filters reduce airflow and increase energy use – they should be replaced according to the manufacturer’s recommendation and operating conditions.
