Multi Split or several separate units: what suits your home

Prepared by EKO2ŠILUMA engineers · Updated 2026-10-29

In a Multi Split system several indoor units connect to one outdoor unit, so the façade has a single box – handy where outdoor space is limited or appearance matters. Separate (single split) systems give each room its own outdoor unit, so they are independent and often stronger for heating in hard frost. We decide based on the number of rooms, how they are used and installation options.

When several rooms need cooling or heating, there are usually two routes: a Multi Split system or several separate single split units. Both are good solutions – what matters is that the choice fits your home.

What Multi Split is

Multi Split is one outdoor unit serving several indoor units. In the Mitsubishi Electric MXZ series, as stated in our catalogue, up to 5 indoor units connect to one outdoor unit; with PUMY-SM, up to 8. Indoor units can be mixed: wall-mounted (MSZ-LN, MSZ-AY, MSZ-EF), floor-standing (MFZ-KT), cassette (SLZ-M) or ducted (SEZ-M). Compatibility with a given outdoor unit is defined by the manufacturer, and we check it for every project.

Advantages of Multi Split

  • One outdoor unit – a tidier façade and less space used on a balcony or beside the house.
  • Flexible combination – the right type and size for each room.
  • Practical in apartment buildings with façade rules or little outdoor space.

What to keep in mind

  • Shared capacity. All indoor units share one outdoor unit. If every room needs a lot of heating or cooling at once, the outdoor unit must be sized for it.
  • Dependency. If the outdoor unit fails, all rooms are affected; with separate systems only one room is.
  • Mode. In a residential Multi Split all indoor units usually run in the same mode at a time – heating or cooling.
  • Pipe runs. Each indoor unit has its own line from the outdoor unit, so routes and lengths must respect manufacturer limits.
  • Heating in frost. If the system is your main heating, single split units with Hyper Heating are often the stronger choice. See heat pumps in the Lithuanian climate.

When separate units make sense

  • only a few rooms (e.g. two) and space for two outdoor units;
  • air-to-air is the main heating and each zone's output in frost matters;
  • you want to expand in stages – living room this year, bedroom next.

When Multi Split makes sense

  • 3–5 or more rooms and only one possible outdoor location;
  • mainly summer cooling, with heating as a supplement;
  • different rooms need different indoor unit types.

How we help you decide

Example: a three-room flat

Say a flat has a living room with kitchen and two bedrooms, and the balcony fits only one outdoor unit. A Multi Split lets you fit a larger wall unit in the living room and smaller, quiet units in the bedrooms. If the same flat could place outdoor units on the façade and air-to-air will be the main heating, separate units are worth considering at least for the living room. Either way we plan the pipe routes in advance so they are concealed or neatly covered.

Controls

Each indoor unit is controlled separately – by remote or via the MELCloud app where the unit has a Wi-Fi interface – so every room holds its own temperature.

Care and service

Whichever option you choose, indoor unit filters should be cleaned regularly and the whole system checked periodically by a specialist. With Multi Split this is done in one visit, as all units share one outdoor unit. We provide both warranty and post-warranty service.

We assess the rooms, their use, outdoor unit locations and pipe routes, then prepare an option with specific Mitsubishi Electric models – and where useful, both options in one quote so you can see the difference. Start with the AC planner, view the system in the 3D Climate Lab and send our engineer a request. On sizing, read what size air conditioner a room needs.

FAQ

How many indoor units can a Multi Split take?

Our catalogue lists up to 5 indoor units for MXZ and up to 8 for PUMY-SM. The exact number depends on the specific outdoor model.

Can a Multi Split heat one room and cool another?

In residential Multi Split systems all units usually run in the same mode at once. For simultaneous modes in buildings, VRF systems such as City Multi are used.

Is Multi Split cheaper than several separate units?

It depends on the number of rooms, unit types and pipe lengths. We can prepare both options so you can compare for your home.
