Air conditioner for a 10 m² room: what capacity do you need?
A 10 m² room is usually a small bedroom, a home office or a guest room. Here the air conditioner works close to people, so we assess noise and airflow direction first and capacity second.
Why an oversized unit is wrong for a small room
- An oversized unit cools the air quickly and switches off often (short cycling). The room cools unevenly and less moisture is removed.
- An inverter unit with a low minimum capacity can run steadily for long periods, which is quieter and more comfortable at night.
- In a bedroom, check the indoor unit's sound pressure level at the lowest fan speed, stated in dB(A).
The smallest wall-mounted class in the Mitsubishi Electric catalogue is, for example, MSZ-AY15VGK with 1.5 kW nominal cooling (connected to a Multi Split outdoor unit). For a single split system, the 2.5 kW class is usually considered, for example MSZ-LN25VG or MSZ-AY25VGK. The specialist selects the exact model.
Preliminary cooling capacity estimate for a 10 m² room
| Window orientation | Load factor | Cooling capacity |
|---|---|---|
| North | 30 W/m³ | 1.1–1.3 kW |
| East | 35 W/m³ | 1.2–1.4 kW |
| South / west | 40 W/m³ | 1.3–1.6 kW |
| South + top floor | 40 W/m³ × 1.15 | 1.5–1.8 kW |
If the air conditioner (an air-to-air heat pump) is also used for heating, a room in energy class C needs a preliminary 0.5–0.7 kW of heating capacity at −23 °C outdoors.
Assumptions: ceiling height 2.7 m, 2 people × 130 W, medium-sized windows, no extra heat-emitting equipment. Formula: Q = A·h·q·fwindows·(1.15 for a top floor) + people·130 W + equipment; range Q…1.2·Q.
Next step
For a more accurate figure, enter the exact ceiling height, window size, number of people and equipment in the air conditioner planner. Before the site visit, prepare photos of the room, a floor plan and a possible outdoor unit location – this shortens coordination and lets the specialist propose the right solution straight away.
This is a preliminary estimate based on the formula of our air conditioner planner; the final capacity and the indoor unit position are confirmed by an EKO2ŠILUMA specialist during a site visit.
FAQ
Is the smallest air conditioner enough for a 10 m² bedroom?
In most cases yes – the preliminary need even for a south-facing room is 1.3–1.6 kW. The specialist still checks the roof, window area and whether a computer or other heat-emitting equipment runs in the room.
Will an air conditioner in the bedroom disturb sleep?
We look at the indoor unit's sound level at the lowest fan speed (dB(A)) and at the unit position – the airflow should not blow directly onto the bed. We discuss this during the site visit.
Can one outdoor unit serve several small rooms?
Yes, that is what a Multi Split system is for: several indoor units connect to one outdoor unit. Whether it suits your home is decided by the specialist based on piping lengths and room loads.
