Mitsubishi Electric – Changes for the Better
HVAC glossary

Flow temperature

Flow temperature is the temperature of the water the heat source sends to the underfloor heating or radiators.

Flow temperature is one of the most important parameters of a heat pump system. The lower the temperature that is enough to heat the house, the more efficiently the heat pump works.

  • Underfloor heating: around 35 °C is usually enough.
  • Low-temperature radiators and mixed systems: around 45 °C.
  • Standard radiators: around 55 °C; old cast-iron or steel radiators may require an even higher temperature.

These values are assumptions used by our calculator – the actual need depends on radiator size and the building’s heat loss. Before replacing a boiler with a heat pump it is worth checking whether the existing radiators will heat the house at a lower temperature; sometimes replacing a few radiators is enough. We also check the maximum flow temperature a specific Mitsubishi Electric model reaches according to the manufacturer’s data. Our specialists assess this during the site visit.

The lower the required temperature, the higher the seasonal efficiency and the lower the load on the compressor.
