Buffer tank
A buffer tank is a water vessel in the heating system that increases system volume and hydraulically separates the heat pump from the heating circuits.
A buffer tank is an insulated water vessel installed between the heat pump and the heating system. It is not mandatory in every house, but in certain cases it is essential for stable and efficient operation.
When a buffer tank is usually needed:
- when the system water volume is small and the heat pump could cycle on and off frequently;
- when there are several heating circuits with different temperatures or mixing groups;
- when many room thermostats can close circuits at the same time;
- during defrosting – so that heat is drawn from the tank rather than from the emitters;
- when combining several heat sources, e.g. a heat pump and a solid-fuel boiler.
An oversized tank increases heat losses and cost, an undersized one does not solve the problem. The connection scheme also matters: a wrongly piped tank can mix flows and reduce efficiency.
Whether your system needs a buffer tank and of what volume is decided by our engineer after assessing the existing heating system and the selected Mitsubishi Electric unit.
